Around Campus: Mid-November Club Updates

The University of Guyana offers a dynamic and engaging campus experience through various student clubs, each dedicated to enriching student life and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth. Joining one of these clubs means gaining access to a supportive community, skill-building activities, and events that foster connections among students from all fields.

Here are this week’s club updates: In the Art Club, members participate in weekly Discord meetings that include digital drawing, sketch activities, and games like Gartic Phone. The club also hosts biweekly in-person sessions where students explore hands-on art forms in events like “Paint and Sip” and mixed-media workshops, providing an outlet for creativity and collaboration. Additionally, the Art Club organizes creative workshops where experienced professionals share insights into various art mediums, enhancing members’ artistic skills and understanding.

The Game Development Club is a space for aspiring game developers and enthusiasts. This club kicked off the academic year with a Club Mixer that included board games and announced “Taste of the Tropics,” a Caribbean-themed cooking game created by club members. Upcoming events include a movie night, collaborative projects with other clubs, and a League of Legends tournament, establishing an engaging and inclusive environment for gamers and developers alike.

For those with a passion for engineering and the energy sector, the UG SPE Student Chapter offers invaluable experiences. Recently, they’ve hosted technical talks on topics like Subsea 101 and Cement 101, a UG Career Fair and Fundraiser, and a mentorship program with industry experts from companies like ExxonMobil and SBM Offshore. The club also encourages practical learning through participation in the PetroBowl and visits to companies like SLB. Looking ahead, the UG SPE Student Chapter plans a Halliburton Info Session, ExxonMobil visits, and activities such as resume workshops, first aid training, and research competitions, which provide students with networking opportunities and industry-relevant knowledge.

The Medical Laboratory Science Student Association (MLSSA) also plays a vital role on campus and within the community. In October, they collaborated with the University of Guyana Rotaract to host Project BRCA, a breast cancer awareness seminar that included activities like word searches and ribbon painting. This semester, MLSSA has planned a Christmas potluck to bring students together and a series of fundraisers to support professional outreach events, allowing members to gain exposure to the medical field and build connections with peers and professionals.
