“My experience at the University of Guyana has been a remarkable one thus far” – Law student. 20-year-old Jhashodra Ramnarain who hails from the closely knitted community of Clifton Settlement on the Corentyne in Berbice, completed her Diploma in Public Management at the University of Guyana Tain Campus and was awarded the prize for the Best Graduating Student in the programme when the campus held its annual convocation and prize giving ceremony in December 2022.
Ramnarain told the UGSS that her experience at the University of Guyana has been a remarkable one thus far since she has learned many new things, made new friends, and undertaken new challenges.
“I have learned the importance of teamwork and the need for time management and leadership skills in order to complete tasks efficiently. However, the extensive knowledge that I have acquired from the University of Guyana is of paramount importance to my experience thus far.”
She said there were challenges while pursuing her diploma, many of which had to do with the impact of the COVID – 19 pandemic. She acknowledged that challenges are inevitable in one’s journey given that they form part of the journey in itself. The aspiring lawyer said that among the challenges was the fact that many of the facilities offered by the University of Guyana were not available for usage which made her learning experience very difficult due to the restrictions implemented as a result of the pandemic.
Ramnarain posited that sourcing adequate reading materials and having access to a stable internet connection were some additional challenges she encountered while pursuing her diploma. Even though she was faced with those challenges, she still has no regrets about completing the Diploma in Public Management.
“This is a programme that provides any individual with a strong conceptual foundation for understanding and analysing the problems faced in public management and governance. It will equip any individual with the effective skills and techniques required to operate within the public sector’s complex environment. Further, this programme is compiled in such a manner to assist any individual in upgrading their academic qualifications for undertaking further studies.”
Ramnarain, is currently a first-year student in the Bachelor of Laws programme offered by the University of Guyana at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus. She is hopeful that with the decrease in the amount of COVID – 19 cases, efforts will be made to ensure to slowly reopen some of the facilities on campus since they are fundamental to the success of each and every University student.
