All too familiar with the hustle and bustle of being a student herself, Tirishatha Semple has shown remarkable dedication to bridging the gaps between students, staff, and lecturers within the university. Many voices have inquired about who exactly is Tirishatha Semple. A refined young woman, Miss Semple presents herself as warm, approachable, and genuinely sincere to everyone she meets. She emphasized the importance of love, strength, and unity as the foundation for healthy relationships and staying grounded when making decisions to pursue goals and ideas. She consistently strives to be her best, setting an example not only for those around her but especially for young children, for whom she has shown deep empathy and affection. Excelling across various fields of talent and brilliance, the 24-year-old International Relations student embraces vulnerability and authenticity as both a champion of values and a creator of art. As we delve a little bit deeper into the bygone days of Ms. Semple’s childhood, we find that a substantial amount of her passion stems from the community of a Hebrew household and her love for music, entertainment, and dance. One of her biggest inspirations since the age of seven has been her father who is a singer. Her first song, “Late for School”, quickly became a beloved classic, woven into the childhood memories of many across Guyana. Her success as a young performer didn’t end there. Always in the spotlight, she has entertained with zeal and has been a passionate participant in numerous Calypso competitions. She’s shared her experiences of putting in the dedication of a champion, sometimes winning, other times giving her all without placing. As she grew, her passions did the same tenfold and she began the journey of playing steel pan at the age of twelve. Now playing for the sensational band, Pangroove, she maintains that appreciation for music and entertainment.

The zest does not just stop at creativity and extravaganza. Tirishatha Semple was introduced to the idea of running for UGSS president by one of her biggest supporters, Jamal Thorrnhill. Due to reasons unknown, Mr. Thornhill had withdrawn from the race and suggested Ms. Semple herself. Taken aback but appreciative of the support, she made the decision to engage in research before taking on such a task, and in understanding the basis of what is required of a president of the student society, she took on the challenge and realized that she could “bring new energy to the university, restore key institutions and put systems in place to help students thrive again”. Running for the presidency while balancing life’s demands was certainly a challenge for this dedicated candidate. Despite the pressures of managing her academics, job, responsibilities, and an effective campaign, the experience proved invaluable, helping her grow, build character, and sharpen her multitasking skills. Ms. Semple understood the requirements and standards of what it meant to be a candidate and applied them throughout her entire campaign. She spoke of being a refined version of her true self and being a beacon to aid the students and their needs. She understood the seriousness of being a positive influence and having the students feel welcomed and know there was a presence they could rely on.

In stepping into presidency, Ms. Semple stated that it is a powerful and historic achievement to be voted as the third female UGSS President, that attracts attention. Some of her plans would include rejuvenating campus life with active encouragement for students to partake in extracurricular activities, campus beautification, improved facilities, free water dispensers, and the implementation of a universal prayer room. The UGSS president has given rise to the necessity of creating a lively atmosphere and an inclusive environment. She aims to make a vibrant and welcoming space for all.

In planning the path ahead, her top priority has consistently been to serve the students.
